What is NSC?

The National Senior Certificate is a three-year qualification that is awarded to a candidate who successfully completes grades 10 – 12.  Candidates need to produce a report card for grades 10 and 11 as part of the entry requirements for grades 12.  The report cards must have been issued by an educational institution registered with one of the examination boards in South Africa.

The pass requirements are as follows:

For a Bachelor’s Pass:

Must obtain at least 40% for Home Language (English).

Must obtain at least 50% for 4 subjects, excl LO.

Must obtain at least 30% for 2 other subjects.

For a Diploma Pass:

Must obtain at least 40% for Home Language (English).

Must obtain at least 40% for 4 subjects, excl LO.

Must obtain at least 30% for 2 other subjects.

For a Higher Certificate Pass:

Must obtain at least 40% in Home Language (English)

Must obtain at least 40% in 3 subjects.

Must obtain at least 30% for 3 other subjects.

For a Pass:

Must obtain at least 40% in Home Language (English)

Must obtain at least 40% in 2 other subjects.

Who issue NSC Certificates?

NSC Certificates are issued by Umalusi only to all candidates/learners that have successfully completed the NSC.  

Umalusi is the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training.  They have a mandate to set and monitor standards for qualifications within the general and further education training band of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
